Gardening Against The Odds

Honouring unsung gardening heroes who bring joy to others

Unsung gardening heroes

The Gardening Against The Odds Awards, which celebrate gardeners whose efforts to create beauty and solace touch the lives of others, are dedicated to the much loved gardening writer Elspeth Thompson and named after her online diary, launched shortly before she died in March 2009.

Roof terraces, balconies, pavement side plots, derelict patches and strips of no man's land made lovely by "random kindness and senseless acts of beauty" as the old hippy tenet has it, are all eligible to enter. Gardening Against The Odds also extends to those who garden despite physical difficulties or in the face of mental and psychological health problems, such as depression and grief.
