The Conservation Foundation’s Yew Tree Campaign to encourage the protection of Britain’s ancient yews - trees which are over 1,000 years old - began in 1987.
The Foundation created Yews for the Millennium distributing 8,500 young yew trees, propagated from ancient trees estimated to be at least 2,000 years old, to over half the parishes in the country to celebrate the new millennium. Further trees are being propagated.
Since then the campaign has raised awareness of the antiquity and the role the yew tree has played in British history along with finance to help protect yews.
The UK Yew Guardianship Project encourages the protection of Britain’s ancient and veteran yews. The Foundation promotes best care and management of these ancient trees and supports research into their longevity.
In association with the Ancient Yew Group (AYG) the Foundation has printed a Code of Care which can be adopted by parishes, land owners and local authorities where ancient or veteran yews are growing. Copies of The Ancient Yew, Robert Bevan-Jones' history of Taxus baccata, are available on Amazon.
In 2005 the Conservation Foundation contributed towards launching the Ancient Yew Group’s (AYG) Ancient Yew Gazeteer Website which will continue updating the distribution of ancient yews throughout the UK.
If you know of any yew with a girth measurement of 14 foot or more, please send us the details to help with our UK Yew Guardianship Project.
